Indie Film Release Guide: March 5th [An ONTD Original]

ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

Lots of theater-only releases again this week, which will likely become more of a trend as the US continues to reopen its theaters in the wake of COVID vaccines becoming more widely available. But because it’s likely that many ONTDers have not yet gotten vaccinated, the films available for home viewing will continue to top the post, with the theatrical exclusives listed separately at the bottom.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. All films listed will be available at their respective sources on Friday unless otherwise noted. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: February 26th, February 19th, and February 12th .

W Magazine's Best Performances Issue 2021

I don't know how we've gone days with addressing this year's W Magazine Best Performances photo shoot, but it's time. This annual photoshoot celebrating a wide range of performances in film and television has always been fairly... controversial:

And this year, with photos by German fashion photographer Juergen Teller, is no exception. Check out some pics from the shoot under the cut, and the rest at W Magazine's instagram.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. All films listed will be available at their respective sources on Friday unless otherwise noted. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: February 19th, February 12th, and February 5th.

How Craigslist Helped Colman Domingo Find True Love

Colman Domingo (Euphoria, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) opened up to GQ about how he met his husband.

  • In 2005, Domingo was in a play about the Jonestown Masscare, and went to his local Walgreens seeking a mud mask to detoxify and destress from the intense role.

  • As he walked into the Berkley, CA Walgreens, he locked eyes with Raúl: long dark hair, a lip piercing, and “these eyes”, as he tells GQ.

  • Raúl had stopped by the Walgreens with a friend to get a gift for a party they were late to because they'd gotten lost, and the friend hurried him out of the store, so the two men never got the chance to speak.

  • The next day, Raúl posted to the Missed Connections board on Craiglist. A few days later, Domingo was looking for a used iPod touch on CL and clicked over to the Missed Connections tab, finding Raul's post.

  • They connected via email and went on a date, where they immediately vibed. They quickly became inseperable, with Raúl showing up at all of his performances with a bouquet of roses.

  • Nine years after they met, they had an intimate surprise wedding disguised as a house party.

  • Domingo says if he'd seen Raúl on a dating app, he probably would have swiped past him because of their age difference - he's 51, and Raúl is eleven years younger.

  • They've been together for fifteen years.

Mid-February would ordinarily be late for award contenders to go into wide release, but considering how far forward the window has shifted this year, Nomadland is premiering on Hulu right on time. The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. All films listed will be available at their respective sources on Friday unless otherwise noted. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: February 12th, February 5th, and January 29th.

'Conversations With Friends' Hulu Adaptation Finds Its Cast

After successfully adapting Sally Rooney's novel Normal People into a limited series in 2020, Hulu and the BBC are doing the same with her debut novel, Conversations With Friends.

The cast includes Alison Oliver, Sasha Lane, Joe Alwyn, and Jemima Kirke, and the series has received a twelve episode order. Many of the creatives behind Normal People will be back for Conversations With Friends, including director and executive producer Lenny Abrahamson and writer Alice Birch. The series is set to premiere in 2022.

The story follows Frances (Oliver), a 21 year old college student, as she navigates a series of relationships that force her to confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time. Frances is observant, cerebral and sharp. Her ex-girlfriend, now best friend, Bobbi (Lane) is self-assured, outspoken and compelling. Though they broke up three years ago, Frances and Bobbi are virtually inseparable and perform spoken word poetry together in Dublin. It’s at one of their shows that they meet Melissa (Kirke), an older writer, who is fascinated by the pair. Bobbi and Frances start to spend time with Melissa and her husband, Nick (Alwyn), a handsome but reserved actor, which leads to new relationships forming while existing ones falter.

All films listed will be available at their respective sources on Friday unless otherwise noted. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: February 5th, January 29th, and January 22nd.
