Salman Khan acquitted of all charges in 2002 hit&run case which claimed the life of a homeless man

On May 6 2015, Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan was judged guilty in the case and was sentenced to prison for 5 years. Today, the Bombay High Court acquitted him of all charges stating that various shortcomings by the prosecution in conducting the case meant that Salman has not been found guilty of the offence.

Salman broke down in court after hearing the verdict. Bollywood celebrated the decision. Hema Malini, for instance, said: "We all feel good about him and this is a great news for all of us. He should now settle down and get married" (lmfao)

In 2002, an allegedly inebriated Salman ran over 5 people sleeping on the pavement next to his apartment building. One of them died later.

A restaurant in Mumbai, dedicated to Salman, celebrated the verdict through a pay-what-you-want offer to its customers.

Indian twitter, however, was less than amused with most bemoaning the impunity with which the rich and the elite can escape law and punishment.

In other news, India's Central Bureau of Investigation charged Salman's protege Sooraj Pancholi, who he also launched in this year's Hero, with abetting the suicide of actress Jiah Khan in 2013. The Bureau said that a note had been found and the post-mortem doctor had said that the note accurately reflects "her mental status genuinely and the circumstances and reasons behind her suicide." In the note Jiah details the physical abuse and mental torture she suffered from Sooraj Pancholi.

There are more sordid details from this sad affair. Jiah was left emotionally wrecked after her pregnancy and subsequent abortion.
From the CBI report in the article: "After taking the medicine, Khan started haemorrhaging and called Pancholi for help. She was in pain and needed immediate medical attention but Pancholi allegedly asked her to wait and called up the gynaecologist for guidance. He was asked to rush Khan to hospital as the foetus had probably aborted but had not been expelled from the body, which is probably what led to the hemorrhaging," the charge sheet says. It adds that Pancholi was afraid that if Khan got hospitalised, their relationship would become public knowledge and his career could grind to a halt even before taking off. Sooraj then decided to take matters in his own hand rather than risk going to a hospital. He extricated the foetus and disposed of it in the toilet, the charge sheet alleges. Read more here.
