Back in October Quentin did an interview in T magazine where he talked to noted misogynist Bret Easton Ellis. One of the topics discussed was DuVernay's movie Selma which he said was more deserving of an Emmy than an Oscar.
He followed that it up with some half-hearted damage control where he threw BEE under the bus for asking a leading question and said he hadn't even seen the film and was comparing it to great made-for-TV movies from the 70s that focused on black civil rights.
DuVernay was silent on the subject until NOW giving this quote to THR:
I was surprised by how surprised everyone was. When you look at his work and his persona, there's nothing surprising about what he said. But it didn't bother me like so many assumed it would.
