New Documentary ‘The Witness’ Debunks the Myths of the Infamous Kitty Genovese Murder

- for those of you who don't know Kitty Genovese was a 28 year old woman who was stabbed to death in 1964 while, supposedly, 38 of her neighbors heard her and did nothing.

- this documentary follows her brother Bill's quest for answers

- the legend began when a article on the murder declared "For more than half an hour 38 respectable, law‐abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens" but...that may not be accurate

- here is a 2004 article that casts doubt on the original reporting

- Bill discovers what many did not know: that Kitty's close friend Sofia heard her screams and went running towards where they were coming from. Kitty died in her arms, a fact that comforts Bill. (Investigation Discovery's A Crime to Remember did an excellent episode on this case.)

- Lena Dunham is supposedly incorporating Kitty's story into an upcoming episode of Girls

- Kitty's death helped create the 911 system

A Crime to Remember covered how the whole '38 witnesses' story is not really what it seems. I had no idea about Sofia running towards her friend (knowing there was danger). It was heartbreaking.
