USC did a new study on gender, race, and ethnicity in films from 2007-2014. The above chart shows the percentage of all speaking or named characters of the 100 top-grossing movies of that year for each race. In 2014, almost three quarters of all speaking or named characters in the top 100-grossing movies were white.
Only 11% of the top 700-grossing films featured a gender-balanced (50% women) cast.
- 17 films out of the top 100-grossing films of 2014 didn't feature a single black character
- out of the top 700-grossing films, there were only 17 asian directors (and only 1 was an asian female director)
- out of 4,610 speaking characters of the top 100-grossing films of 2014, only 19 were lesbian, gay, or bisexual. There were no transgender characters
