Beyoncé to take the Grammys to church with gospel performance

Prepare to be touched by the holy ghost! Beyonce is going to take the Grammys to church on Sunday night (February 1) when she introduces Common and John Legend‘s performance of Selma anthem “Glory” with a gospel standard. The game-changing diva will perform “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” which Ledisi sang on the film’s official soundtrack album. The song was known to be one of Martin Luther King Jr.‘s favorites.

“We’re getting an introduction from the great Beyonce,” Common revealed to Rolling Stone. “That’s a whole other level, to have her singing ‘Precious Lord.’ I’m excited.” The Chicago rapper knows that the stakes are high, adding: “It’s the Grammys stage, so we’re going to deliver some of the best performances we ever had. Expect the spirit of what the movie is about, the spirit of what the movement is about, and the spirit of what ‘Glory’ is about.”

Common alsp spoke about the importance of performing a protest anthem like “Glory,” which recently won best song at the Golden Globes, at the Grammys. “This is what I want to do as an artist. This is who I want to be as a person — to be able to speak up and say things that can impact people’s lives, and things that can be inspiring to human beings,” he said. “There’s no other song besides ‘Glory’ that I’d want to be my first opportunity to perform at the Grammys.”
