2014 will be remembered for its iconic scandals and controversies (probably most notably the Sony Hack), but along the way, the public was greeted with artists being shoved down their throats.
This list is a compilation of the 10 most overexposed artists of 2014, and hopefully they will take a step back in 2015.
1. Igloo Australia
Oh Igloo. She started out the year very quietly, but in February, that all started to change with the release of 'Fancy.' She dominated the Summer Billboard charts, with 'Fancy' clocking in at #1 for 7 straight weeks, and her feature on 'Problem' also scoring very strongly on the charts. Since then, Igloo has dominated headlines for controversies, feuds, and embarrassments. Will Iggy remain a media force in 2015, or is she destined to fall by the wayside?
2. Nick Jonas
B.o.B. may have set a thirst trap on Instagram over the weekend, but Nick Jonas has been revitalizing his career through thirst traps over the past few months. He has pursued a dual-pronged approach: pander to the gays and appropriate black culture. 'Jealous' has quietly crept up the Billboard charts, and has turned into a hit for the former boyband member. How long are Nick's weird-looking pecs going to keep him in the ONTD headlines? Only time will tell.
3. Pharrell Williams
I think everybody was over 'Happy' - a song from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack - before it even was released. But then we were subjected to hear it before every Today Show commercial break, at every Applebee's and Burger King, and covered by every elementary school choir. Also, Pharrell's hat got way more media attention than necessary. It is a hat. He's also been fulfilling the "one-black-male-judge" quota on The Voice this season.
4. Ariana Grande
By the Grace of God, 2014 was the year that Ariana Grande actually happened. She's been a presence on the Billboard charts for nearly the entire year: 'Problem', 'Break Free', 'Bang Bang', and 'Love Me Harder' all reached the top 10. She's performed at pretty much every major music awards show since June, and has managed to keep her momentum going for months. However, the real reason she lands a spot on this list is for her incessant "diva-behavior" rumors that never seem to go away. She's also been dating Big Sean, but his irrelevance probably brings her down from being too overexposed.
5. Nicki Minaj
Despite Igloo dominating a lot of the headlines, 2014 was actually the year of Onika. Instead of writing all of this out, I am instead going to list all that she has done this year - all before her album even dropped this week.
-Starred in The Other Woman
-Lookin Ass video
-Pills N Potions
-Won the BET Award for Best Hip-Hop Artist for the 5th consecutive year
-Anaconda - broke the VEVO record for most views in 24 hours; her highest-charting single to date
-Major TV performances: SNL, AMA's, VMA's (THREE performances), etc.
-'Only' controversy for featuring Nazi imagery
-ONTD gets a shoutout in her Wikipedia entry for being pressed about the Only lyric video
-Nominated for two Grammys
-Controversial feud with Igloo Australia
Onika can't be stopped.
No matter where you were this summer, you heard - and hated - Magic!'s 'Rude'. It is an annoying song with annoying lyrics and lazy music, but somehow it topped the Billboard charts for most of the summer. They don't seem to have a follow-up hit, but they are included simply because it was impossible to escape 'Rude' this summer.
7. Meghan Trainor
#PottyTrainors rejoice! Meghan Trainor, a 20-year old from Nantucket, managed to become the it girl in the latter half of 2014. Her debut single 'All About That Bass' spent 8 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and has become one of the most downloaded songs of all time. While many on ONTD believed her to be a one-hit wonder (similar to Carly Rae), Meghan has proven them wrong. Her follow-up single 'Lips Are Movin' has recently reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is only going to keep growing. However, Meghan's overexposure doesn't come without its drawbacks: she has made controversial statements about feminism and eating disorders.
