When Divas Get Shady: An ONTD anthology

Pop divas are just like us and we live in a very shady world y'all! So take out your reading glasses, butter up your popcorn and enjoy the best shades, reads and drags that our beloved Pop Divas have offered us!

The Shade Professors

Mariah Carey- Mean Girls Aficionado

Mariah has not been afraid to go there since the start of her once promising career. Back in 1995 she said this about Madonna: "I haven't paid attention to Madonna since I was in like 7th or 8th grade when she used to be popular". But that's far from the end of it; the big M also had a well-documented feuding relationship with singer/rapper/professional mess Nicki Minaj on American Idol. Mariah took several jabs at Onika including when she wondered about the nature of her profession stating "I don't know what she sings, I didn't know she sung I thought she rapped or whatever". Finally Mariah- the solo artist with the most US no1's in history- ended Nicki by poking fun at her unfortunate lack of any chart-topping songs by noting that "back to the Billboard no1 song which you just performed, which is difficult to get not everybody has that!". This is how you do it folks.

And finally let's not forget the time that Mariah erased JLo's entire career respnding with this when asked what she thought of her:

Whitney Houston - Nippy Shading Queen

Whitney will forever remain the Queen of Vocals and Shades, having left a long legacy of leaving people with their mouths open either as a result of her astonishing vocals or ha swift and deadly shades. Here are some of her best moments:

When asked what she thought about Mariah Carey: "What do I think of her? I don't think of her!"
Commenting on working with a producer who's just had a big hit with Madonna: "Before Madonna it was Face (the producer) and I, ok? Do I need to say any more?"

Aretha Franklin - The Queen of Soul

Often dubbed "Hateretha" by her seething critics/shade victims, the Queen of Soul has always found a way to put someone in their proper place and re-affirm that there can only be one true Queen. Here's what she had to say when asked to comment on Mariah Carey becoming the highest-paid judge on television:

"How do you know that? Inside sources? Would that be her husband?" (@ 1:20)

And let's not forget Aretha's epic snub of fellow diva Patti LaBelle at a White House function:

More recently this is what the Queen of Soul had to say about Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj:

On Taylor Swift: "great gowns, beautiful gowns"
On Nicki Minaj: "Nicki Minaj.....I'm gonna pass on that!"

Finally, Aretha, who is known to be highly critical of artists' singing abilities, had this to say about Beyonce lipping the National Anthem at Obama's inauguration:

"When I heard [she lip-synched] I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record."

Janet Jackson - Ms. Jackson

Janet threw effortless shade when she politely responded to the Madonna comparisons by noting: "How do I put this? I think what I do has class to it, I'll say that..." (@ 3:15)

Madonna - The Immaculate

Let's start by wrapping up Janet's aforementioned shade. Although their supposed rivalry cooled down in later years, M took a masterful jab at the retired singer when she discussed her own Superbowl plans: “I have not mainstreamed and I’m not planning anything naughty. I’m planning something super entertaining. Yep, yep! You don’t have to show nipples to be interesting. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re cutting edge if you do, right?”

However, most people will remember Madonna's iconic response to Lady Gaga's downright CTRL+V song, Born this Way. Madonna simply stated that she found the Jazz singer "reductive" and when asked to elaborate, Madonna took a sip of her (truth) tea and said "Look it up!" (@ 7:00)

Cher - Drag Mother

Back in the 90s parallels were often drawn between Cher and Madonna since both of them had a habit of re-inventing themselves and changing up their image. This is what Cher had to say when asked about her "friend" Madonna!

And who can forget when a fan asked her on (her iconic) twitter account, what she did to celebrate Madonna's birthday and Cher replied that she got a colonic #wtfisMDNA

The Shade Understudies

Christina Aguilera - Legend X

From the start of her career Christina Aguilera was not afraid to speak her mind about other artists in the bussines and a lot of the time she did not have too many nice things to say. Although this led to her quickly developing a bad rep for being a bitch, one thing is certain; love her or hate her Xtina is one shady sis! When asked what she thought of Mariah Carey -one of the most celebrated vocalists in the history of music- X (after chuckling at her acting abilities or lack of) said "Oh Mariah. She's a great song-writer I will say that!" @ 1:52

Britney Spears - The Holy Spearit

Although known, and celebrated, for always staying humble and down to earth in the business and by extension having mostly nice things to say about her peers, Britney has not been a stranger at throwing some casual, Southern-girl shade from time to time! After Xtina tried to drag her for kissing Madonna, saying that Britney only did it because she needed a gimmick, Brit Brit was quick to respond noting: "Wait, wait; I gotta say this, didn't she kiss her too?" Merciless Louisiana shade! @2:45

Additionally, when the wife of the Governor of Maryland said that she wanted to kill Britney (at a domestic violence prevention conference no less), Britney replied "I feel sorry for her, she probably needs to get laid!" @ 4:55

Beyonce - Queen (Ado)Bey

Much like Britney, Bey has largely behaved in the pop music world and has had mostly nice things to say about her peers. Is this because she's a genuine humble person or is it due to her 5th-grade education preventing her from forming a coherent shady sentence together? The jury's still out on that one but here's a potentially shady remark that Bey had about Rihanna, when asked about their long-rumored rivalry:

“There is room on this earth for many queens. I have an authentic, God-given talent, drive, and longevity that will always separate me from everyone else. I’ve been fortunate to accomplish things that the younger generation of queens dream of accomplishing. I have no desire for anyone else’s throne. I am very comfortable in the throne I’ve been building for the past 15 years.”

The Shade apprentices

Katy Perry - Kitty Purry

Former Christian artist and current penile songstress Katheryn Hudson occasionally opens her mouth and let's some hard truths out! Guess she skipped that pesky ~love thy neighbor~ chapter on her Bible study group. While discussing Mariah Carey on an Australian television show, the Firewerk singer said that the aging diva is "fabulous for a throwback, fabulous! (@ 7:10). In the same interview Katheryn also came for Miley's make out antices stating that she pulled away from her because "God knows where that tongue has been!" (@7:50)

Rihanna- BadGalRiri

When, Wallmart Employee of the Month and part-time back up dancer, Ciara tried to come for Riri for allegedly being rude to her in an industry function this painful twitter convo ensued:

Selena Gomez - Asylum applicant

Although forever seemingly dickmatized, Selena has had short and elusive (tickets for Mariah's restaurant show available now!) periods of lucid thinking. The most entertaining came from an appearance at the David Letterman show where she alluded to making the Biebz cry!
