N.J. nurse wins $1 million for Wasabi Ginger potato chips

Sometimes, millionaire dreams crumble like potato chips. And if you fell in love with Lay’s Wavy Mango Salsa chips, you better grab them while you can.

The winner of Lay’s “Do Us A Flavor” national taste test was Meneko Spigner McBeth of Deptford, N.J. In the “create a new flavor” contest, the registered nurse submitted Lay’s Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger, which beat out three other finalists — Wavy Mango Salsa, Cappuccino and Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese.

More than 14 million recipe ideas were submitted to Lay’s. During the three-month trial, the finalists’ flavors were available in stores across the country. Consumers submitted about 1 million votes for their favorite flavor via a social media campaign.

For her spicy idea, McBeth wins $1 million or a percentage of the new flavor’s sales for a year, which ever is bigger. While Wasabi Ginger becomes a regular addition to the Lay’s chip family, the three other finalists will soon disappear off shelves.
