Adam McKay is attached to direct and Seth Rogen is onboard to star in an untitled comedy that is based on a pitch from actor and Emmy-winning writer Ben Schwartz.
Gary Sanchez Productions, Point Grey Pictures and Good Universe are teaming to develop the project, which they bought pre-emptively. Point Grey and Good Universe last collaborated on the hit comedy Neighbors, starring Rogen.
Schwartz will also co-star in the film.
Point Grey principals Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, the trio behind the upcoming comedy The Interview, will produce alongside Gary Sanchez’s Will Ferrell, McKay and Kevin Messick. Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake will executive produce, with Erin Westerman overseeing for the company. Robyn Wholey will co-produce.
"Evan and Seth have been doing amazing things and we're so excited to work with them. Ben, not so much," McKay said jokingly in a statement. "Most of my problems with him are personal ones, but I have to give it up. He did come up with a great idea."
Added Rogen and Goldberg: “Every 2,000 years, the planets of our galaxy align in a perfect line that funnels the cosmic energies of the universe to flow into one perfect comedic collaboration. The time is now. This is that project. Nothing will ever be the same. McKay and Schwartz are real smart, well-endowed guys, and we couldn't be more excited to be working with them.”
Schwartz -- who won the 2009 Emmy for outstanding original music and lyrics for The 81st Annual Academy Awards' Hugh Jackman opening number -- has sold pitches No Heart's Club and Would You Rather to Universal, with Imagine Entertainment producing and was hired by Paramount to reboot the comedy Soapdish. His script El Fuego Caliente was included on the 2011 Blacklist.
As an actor, Schwartz will next be seen playing a rabbi in Warner Bros.' This is Where I Leave You and recently wrapped production on Robert Zemeckis' next film The Walk for TriStar. He also is returning for NBC’s Parks and Recreation and Showtime's House of Lies.
Dan Freedman negotiated the deal on behalf of Good Universe. He is repped by WME, Lev Ginsburg at Ginsburg Daniels and Haven Entertainment.
McKay is handled by WME, Mosaic and Level Four Business Management.
Rogen is represented by UTA and attorney Fred Toczek.
yay, Benny Schwaz!!
