Sip, se puede: Hennessy Cognac features Obama poster artist

The bottle: Hennessy V.S. Limited Edition, $32

The back story: What’s a quick and easy way to sell a few hundred thousand bottles of Cognac? Just put a label on it designed by the same street artist who created the iconic Obama “Hope” poster.

As strange as that may sound, it’s what the team at Hennessy Cognac seems to be thinking. The brand recently launched its Hennessy V.S. Limited Edition — “limited” in this case means 315,000 bottles — with a label courtesy of “Hope” artist Shepard Fairey, who’s also known for his “Obey” sticker campaign. It’s actually the fourth in an annual series by the famed Cognac brand (previous Hennessy editions have featured labels by similarly provocative artists, including graffiti specialist Futura X and toy designer KAWS).

As for what’s inside the bottle, it’s the base level of Hennessy, which means it’s got a degree of warmth and spice, but it’s not the kind of Cognac that’s going to change your life. If you’re a serious sipper, you’ll want to graduate to a higher-level expression — Hennessy has Cognacs that go for as much as $3,000 a bottle, after all. Or try a different brand altogether: Our current favorite Cognac is Camus’ Ile de Re line, but that’s another story.

How to enjoy it: Hennessy folks say the bottle is popular as a collectible — meaning a good number of buyers never open it. But if you do decide to break the seal, you can enjoy this neat as the inexpensive Cognac it is. Or you can use it as a mixer (yes, Cognac works well in cocktails). In honor of the Fairey bottle, the Hennessy team has come up with a drink called “The Revolution” that combines the Cognac with lemon-lime soda and Angostura bitters.
