Something I Never Thought Would Happen: Marin Cilic is a Grand Slam Champion

Marin Cilic defeated Kei Nishikori, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, at the United States Open on Monday night to win his first Grand Slam title.

A showcase for the next generation in men’s tennis, the match was the first Grand Slam final since the 2005 Australian Open that did not include Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray.

The 14th-seeded Cilic, who defeated No. 6 Tomas Berdych and No. 2 Roger Federer on his way to the final, is the lowest seed to win the U.S. Open since Pete Sampras won the 2002 tournament as the No. 17 seed.
