She was left devastated after missing out on a role in a hit New York City-based drama, which went on to feature Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick.
However in hindsight Lily Collins has admitted that it was probably for the best as it would have meant being 'signed away for six years'.
In an exclusive interview with the October issue of Marie Claire, the 25-year-old actress commented: 'I tested for Gossip Girl. I wanted to be in it so badly, I thought at the time it was the end of the world.
'But now I think, 'well I would have got pigeon-holed, have had to move to New York, leave high school and be signed away for six years. I wouldn't have done the films I've done, and everything would have been so different.'
