Russell Brand has defended Justin Bieber over the recent videos showing the popstar using racist language.
The comedian said that the 'Baby' singer is being "unduly harassed and belittled" by the media, and called the uncovering of the videos an "archaeological dig into a child".
Brand said in a YouTube video: "You elevate him to a position that he can't possibly fulfil, like a sacrificial virgin or something. We fill him up, oil him up, groom him, get him all lovely, now we're at the point where we want to butcher him."
Bieber has apologised for the racially insensitive comments made in the clips, saying that facing up to his past "mistakes" has been "one of the hardest things" he's ever dealt with.
In an earlier post, Brand said that people should consider the videos are five years old, and recorded when Bieber was 14.
"It was ages ago when he had used to have that haircut," the 39-year-old explained. "We can't do him for stuff he done when he had that haircut.
"[If] we're going to explicitly say that the role of celebrities is we're going to make them really famous and then destroy them and rip them up in a public square with fish hooks... we might as well own up to it, otherwise just let him off.
"Of course it's wrong to say the N-word, but he is a child."
