Jaden Smith, Liev Schreiber cast in slavery drama 'The Good Lord Bird'

Jaden Smith and Liev Schreiber have signed on to bring James McBride's National Book Award winning novel "The Good Lord Bird" to the big screen, Deadline reports.

Smith, 15, will play Henry "Onion" Shackleford, a young slave who travels with real-life radical abolitionist John Brown, played by 46-year-old "Ray Donovan" star Schreiber.

The historical novel has Onion encounter many key antebellum historical figures, such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman.

McBride, who served as screenwriter for film adaptations of his two other novels, "Miracle At St. Anna" and "Red Hook Summer," will produce the film.
