'Captain America 2' Earns $10.2 Million from Thursday Screenings

Marvel fans came out in droves last night for Thursday night screenings of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to the tune of a whopping $10.2 million, pushing the Phase Two sequel past $100 million worldwide. $1.2 million of that total came from 344 IMAX theaters.

Anthony Russo and Joe Russo's sequel eclipsed the Thursday gross of Thor: The Dark World, which took in $7.1 million en route to an $85.7 million opening weekend. However, it fell just short of the $15.6 million Thursday tally earned by Iron Man 3, which went on to gross $174.1 million in its first weekend, the second-highest opening weekend of all time, behind 2012's Marvel's The Avengers ($207.4 million). Captain America: The Winter Soldier also beat out Warner Bros.' Man of Steel, which took in $9 million on Thursday and $116 million for the three-day weekend.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier's worldwide total now stands at $105 million, and it seems to be a clear lock to break the April opening weekend record set by 2011's Fast Five, which earned $86.2 million over its first three days. The sequel opens in 3,938 theaters today.

Do you think Captain America: The Winter Soldier can break $100 million this weekend? .
