I Believe! Spring Awakening Movie Still on Track...with New Song

The creative team behind the Spring Awakening movie, who had been hoping to go into production in 2013, is still aiming to get the musical onto the silver screen sooner rather than later. Composer Duncan Sheik revealed to U-T San Diego that he and lyricist/book writer Steven Sater are “trying to get the the Spring Awakeningmovie made this year. It’s in process.”

Sheik has good reason to be hopeful: “We have a fancy director (McG) and a fancy producer (Playtone, Tom Hanks’ company) involved. So fingers crossed we’ll be diving into it.” There’ll also be a new song. “It’s the only way you’re eligible for an Academy Award.”

No word yet on who will star in the film, but whomever boards has big shoes to fill—the original 2006 Broadway cast included
Lea Michele and
Jonathan Groff. Spring Awakening depicts how young people navigate the thrilling, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening. The story centers on a brilliant young student named Melchior, his troubled friend Moritz and Wendla, a beautiful young girl on the verge of womanhood. The Tony-winning show is based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind.
