Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are rumoured to have gotten very close on the set of their series The Americans. The stars appeared to be on a date as they took in the play Library at The Public Theatre in New York on Thursday night. Keri, 38, who announced her split from husband Shane Deary in December, appeared to be enjoying Matthew's company very much as she chatted with Rhys, 39, in front of the theater entrance.

The Welsh actor was leaning in closer to Keri just as their picture was being taken. Keri's face broke into a little smile as she was caught on a night out with her co-star. 'They looked very close, like a couple on a date together,' an eyewitness revealed. The petite actress was leaning against a column and dressed casually in jeans, a black leather jacket and rugged boots.

Matthew mirrored that understated look in cuffed jeans, a red plaid shirt and black padded jacket, along with high-top trainers. 'It was very obvious they weren't just there as two people who work together,' the eyewitness continued. 'They were whispering in each others ear and at one point Keri was stroking and playing with Matthew's hair very affectionately.' The source further added: 'They were sitting next to each other in the theatre and she was stroking his head at one point.

'It was clearly a date and they were being quite open about that. After the show they hung out in the lobby with some friends then left together.' Matthew recently told People magazine that his own mother has believed the rumours flying around that he and his pretty co-star are dating. 'She calls up going, "What's going on? I just read this about you,"' he told the magazine. 'I tell her, "You have to take off your Google alerts."'

Set during the cold war in the 1980s, The Americans is currently in its second season on FX. Keri and Matthew play Soviet spies Elizabeth and Phillip Jennings who, after being brought together by an arranged marriage, live double lives raising two children in suburban Reagan-era Washington, DC while spying on the American government.

Keri's publicist announced the actress had separated from her husband Shane Deary on December 5 after six years of marriage. 'They have been separated since early summer,' the rep told People. 'The separation is amicable and their focus is on their children.' The couple are parents to son River, six, and daughter Willa, two.
