The other day in the Fashionista office, we were chatting about how so many of our favorite models — Karlie Kloss, Jourdan Dunn, Chrissy Teigen — seem to just love to cook, and have even starred in a few online video clips that see them working their magic in the kitchen. Its almost as if they’re trying to disprove the long-standing belief that models just don’t eat. The same goes for one specific trope of fashion photography, the “models eating sloppily” theme, which has been spearheaded by Terry Richardson — until now.
In an editorial for the December 2013 issue of Interview Germany, Ellen von Unwerth captures three gorgeous girls stuffing their faces at a fancy restaurant. This really brings us back to a number of Richardson’s most striking shoots from years past, including Crystal Renn in the 90th anniversary issue of Vogue Paris back in 2010 (see below), Lindsey Wixson slurping down spaghetti in Vogue Nippon’s June 2011 issue and Natasha Poly casually snacking on some fried chicken in a 2005 issue of Vogue Paris.
While we love to see a model unabashedly eat, these shoots are always a little jarring because they seem to try really hard to make food look flat-out grotesque. Do you think this is a powerful statement on the industry or simply a shock-value cliché?
