10 (5) Things You Didn't Know About 'The Hobbit'

5.  An unauthorized 'Harry Potter' sequel was published and sold in China. It was actually comprised of large sections of 'The Hobbit' with the names changed.

4.  Film Company, SZC, threatened 'The Hobbit' pub (in the UK) with legal action due to copyright infringement.  Outraged, Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen paid the pub's license fee.

3.  When making Smaug's treasure and lair, the production team used up all of the gold paint in New Zealand. They had to import more from Germany to finish the set.

2.  In 1984, a Soviet TV film version of 'The Hobbit' was made.  Bilbo is taller than Gandalf, and dancing goblins are portrayed by a Russian ballet school.

1.  The first two 'Hobbit' films have a budget twice that of the entire 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy--$200+ million each.  Reportedly $380,000 was spent on coffee during production alone.
