J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will co-write “Star Trek 3″ along with Roberto Orci, who penned the previous two installments for Skydance and Paramount Pictures.
Paramount and Skydance were at one point in talks with “Attack the Block” helmer Joe Cornish, but he is no longer involved.
As of now the film has no logline or start date but the studio hopes for a 2016 release. All of the main cast including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are expected to return.
J.J. Abrams will produce along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and Skydance’s David Ellison.
Abrams, who directed the last two, will not direct this one as he is already committed to direct the next “Star Wars” film for Disney.
Payne and McKay have ties to Abrams, most recently penning the Bad Robot pic “Boilerplate,” which is still in development.
The two are repped by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.
GET RID OF ORCI, DAMMIT! I got excited when I saw the first part of the headline on Twitter, thinking they would be replacing the whole writing team, but alas!
