Gaga defends Katy's Geisha Performance: "People are too sensitive and should just leave her be"

Last night (Nov. 24), Lady Gaga teamed up with R. Kelly for what appeared to be a Marilyn Monroe/John F. Kennedy-themed rendition of “Do What U Want” on the American Music Awards, but she insists she wasn’t trying to make a commentary on the recent 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination.

“We were trying, actually, to steer the performance away from Marilyn, that was my attempt! Pretty terrible attempt,” she told Carson Daly this morning (Nov. 25) on Los Angeles’ AMP Radio (a Radio.com station). “It’s really more just about any kind of scandal. I mean, there’s been lots of scandals in the White House, but you know, there’s scandals everywhere else — in pop culture and celebrity life — so I was doing sort of a comment about that.”

Katy Perry’s geisha-inspired AMAs performance also made headlines for cries of racist undertones, but Gaga didn’t see things that way sitting in the audience.

“Maybe it’s because ‘Unconditionally’ means you’re supposed to love no matter what and geishas are paid?” she questioned. ”I think people are generally too sensitive and they should just leave her be, but you know, I’m not really the person to ask.”

She is the person to ask, though, on when we can expect her upcoming ARTPOP Tour.

“I can’t wait to bring my tour back to America. We’re going to be announcing it very soon,” she said. “I’m going on tour next year and we’re announcing something in December.”
