Britney Spears' 'Perfume' is over-emotional departure from her last catchy single: Review

Single from upcoming album, 'Britney Jean,' doesn't rely on the dance-friendly beats that the previous 'Work Bitch' tapped so well.

Uh-oh. Britney wants to emote.
In the star’s new single, “Perfume” — posted Monday to her Facebook page — she gives her common robo-self a rest. Instead of Brit’s regular electro-shock dance track, “Perfume” aches through a grandiloquent melody. Which means she has to, you know, feel.

It’s a risky counter to “Work Bitch,” the first single from Brit’s forthcoming CD, “Britney Jean,” out Dec. 3rd. That song played it safe by putting the accent on the catchy jerk of a beat rather than on the star’s barely-there vocals.

The busy arrangement of “Perfume,” complete with soaring strings and bubbling synths, compensates for a lot.

Spears’ overly ambitious emoting is aided by some slick production.

Thoughts, ONTD? I thought it was so-so at first listen but now I'm in love
