Bill Willingham to End Fables Comics

Even as the popular fantasy comic Fables begins spreading into other media with the release of Telltale Games' The Wolf Among Us, it seems the comic itself is going to be winding down over the next year. On his personal website today, writer/creator Bill Willingham announced that he and artist Mark Buckingham intend to wrap up Fables as of issue #150. Willingham said:

"After more than ten years of publication, and hundreds of issues of Fables, and various Fables-related works, I have decided the time has come to begin the process of bringing our sweeping story to a close. And, along the way, I’ve decided to retire from a great deal of my comics work.
Retirement in the storytelling trade means, still working and writing every day, but being a bit more selective in what projects I take on. Pushing 60, I thought it would be a good time to start making concrete plans for those remaining good writing years."

Willingham also noted that the companion series, Fairest, will also wrap up shortly before Fables #150. The good news is that the most recent issue of the series to ship is Fables #134, so fans still have more than a year's worth of stories to look forward to. Unless Vertigo opts for an accelerated shipping schedule, this means the last issues of Fables and Fairest will be released in early 2015. This is sad news, obviously, but hopefully Willingham can give characters like Bigby Wolf, Snow White, Rose Red, and the rest of the large cast the conclusion they deserve.
