Oh but Pocahontas is such a freaking sad movie. Super problematic too, but it was always weird to me that Disney made a movie like that for kids. Even the 'happier' scenes were tinged with this strange melancholy. There was an ephemeral quality to the entire thing too.

That's what I love about it. It's different than the other Disney animated movies because of that.

Pocahontas is an odd example. At the time, Disney was fresh off the massive success of Beauty and the Beast, which had scored the first-ever Best Picture nomination at the Oscars ~~damn Silence of the Lambs...~~. It showed that animated movies- particularly Disney animated movies- could be seen as more than just fluffy fairy tales for children.

So they tried to make lightning strike twice and go more serious, more dramatic, more "realistic" movie with Pocahontas by basing it off an actual event than a fairy tale or children's book. The art style was far more realistic-looking than had ever been done before, and the movie was twinged with violence. Don't even get me started on the ending. Hell, she wasn't even supposed to have the funny little animal friends, but the suits wanted at least some kid-friendly element to it for marketability, so the creators came to the compromise that they'd be there, but wouldn't talk (to her or anybody).

They went to great lengths to accurately represent native culture (well, kinda. They researched it, at least), but based the story off of the romanticized legend of Pocahontas that'd been popular since the 1800's. To be fair, I don't think anyone wanted to see a movie with a romance between a 12-year-old and a (let's call him) mid-30's-year-old (except you, Steve. You know who you are).

All in all, it was their valiant attempt at Oscar bait and they assigned their A-team to work on it. They also had another movie in production at the same time; but it was considered merely secondary to Pocahontas, brushed off by most in the studio as just 'another funny little talking animal movie' to keep the bills paid.

This whole scene is fucking classic.

lol same. Whenever female animal characters got the ~sexy eyes~, I was like "Uhhhh, I don't like this..." eg. Nala in this scene, Thumper and Flower's female counterparts in the "twitterpated" scene in Bambi, the fucking STRIPPED MICE in The Great Mouse Detective... like what even?!

i was so AGAINST the CGI animation and the 3D and just everything about it but then my husband wanted to watch it and afterwards i was just dancing around going "AND AT LAST I SEE THE LIGHT!!!"

Same. I was surprised how good and funny it was. I was side-eyeing my nieces for wanting to watch it at first. I should trust them more.

My friend and I decided to watch this movie immediately after A Single Man bc we were so depressed and we thought it would cheer us up and then Ray died and we both sobbed.

And then he joins his Evangeline and becomes the second star to the right. MY FEELS.

His Evangeline song was the best song in the movie.

Just booked Disney World today for next Thanksgiving...so excited!

iirc Disney was pushing them for a certain deadline and they had very little time. Like, they showed B&B at some film festival and parts of it were still in black and white.

Her face changes in almost every scene where she's helping her father with his invention

My favorite part in the whole film is him getting ready for the dance. The look of utter heartbreak when she tells him her father is sick and could die and he knows he has to let her go... UGH

Obviously I was a greedy and covetous child, because all I could focus on in this movie was how much I wanted that castle. ballrooms, libraries, staircases etc etc etc

I was just on tumblr looking for cute Disney gifs. It is severely lacking in the Alice and Wonderland department.

Anyways, how about the scene in The Adventures of Robin Hood with Robin and Maid Marian with the song Love Goes On? That is one of my faves.

OMG I KNOW RIGHT? lol I was totally going to say that I had a crush on Robin Hood because of that movie but didn't know if that was weird and probably something I should keep to myself. I'm glad I'm not alone.
