Ahead of the release of her upcoming third studio album ARTPOP we take a look back at Lady Gaga’s debut album The Fame released five years ago
In August of 2008 an unknown, fresh faced pop singer with crazy ambitions and a crazier fashion sense released her debut album. New Yorker Stefani Germanotta spent two and half years writing and preparing for its release under her stage name Lady Gaga.
The Fame, a dance-pop, electronic album with influences from the 80′s was released to critical acclaim. Although the music was dance-heavy critics praised the lyrical content and vocal ability of Lady Gaga – many comparing her to No Doubt‘s Gwen Stefani.
The album went on to sell 16 millions copies, topped the Billboard charts in multiple countries and is listed on Rolling Stone‘s list of the ‘100 Greatest Debut Albums Of All-Time.’
Hit singles from the album include “Just Dance”, “LoveGame”, “Paparazzi” and “Poker Face”.
Of the album, Gaga said “I couldn’t be more proud of it. It’s not just a record, it’s a whole pop art movement.” She felt that her album was not just about the music – it was a performance art piece that combined theatrics, stage performance, costumes with the songs on her album.
Though the album contains mostly upbeat, dance tracks Gaga was sure to show off her songwriting and vocal ability through special acoustic versions of her songs.
