Matthew McConaughey, John Lithgow on Okotoks set of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar +1st set video!
Okotoks went Hollywood on Thursday as hundreds of locals were put to work as extras alongside Matthew McConaughey in the secretive unit shoot of Christopher Nolan’s newest sci-fi mindbender, Interstellar.
The star-studded production, which has been using various locations in Alberta since early August, spent most of the day at Seaman Stadium, where scenes involving a baseball game were to be shot.
A source with knowledge of the big-budget shoot said scenes were scheduled to be shot in the Okotoks town square.
More than 300 extras were required for Thursday’s shoot.
“There’s crowds, kids on a field trip, baseball players,” said the source, who did not want to be identified.
What this has to do with the plot of the film is unclear, as the narrative of Interstellar has been kept under tight wraps.
But the unit shoot, which is expected to last until Sept. 9, has employed hundreds of extras and roughly 130 crew members, including 100 locals.
Other than Okotoks, locations for the Paramount and Warner Brothers production have included Nanton, Longview and Lethbridge.
The film is being shot under the name Flora’s Letter. It has a production office in Okotoks.
It’s unclear how many of the stars were on hand on Thursday other than McConaughey and veteran actor John Lithgow, who were both spotted at the stadium.
The film also stars Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Topher Grace and Ellen Burstyn. Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway also stars in the film, but sources tell the Herald she is not involved in the Alberta unit shoot.
Interstellar is set to be released Nov. 7, 2014.
The Internet Movie Database describes the plot as “An exploration of physicist Kip Thorne’s theories of gravity fields, wormholes and several hypothesis that Albert Einstein was never able to prove.”
Nolan, who was spotted alongside McConaughey this weekend at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, has shot in Alberta before.
He filmed parts of the sci-fi thriller Inception on Fortress Mountain in Kananaskis in 2009.
The first set video has also surfaced.
Bonus: user ShutterFinger on NolanFans has also uploaded some good shots of the cast and crew.
So excited y'all!
