'The Originals' Joseph Morgan on Klaus, Hayley baby: It'll be amazing

We thought we couldn't be more excited about brand new Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals, and then we were lucky enough to catch up with the cast at San Diego's Comic-Con and they were so wonderful that suddenly the wait for October became even more dreadful.

Luckily, in the short time us reporter types got to spend with the cast, we managed to squeeze out a few teasers to tide us over. Take Joseph Morgan - Klaus! - who spoke to us about what we can expect from that pesky hybrid baby Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is currently gestating...

Baby tv story lines bore me tbh..

Joseph heard about the baby early... and still didn't realize Klaus was the daddy

I think it's fair to say that we were all very surprised when we heard that Klaus had somehow managed to father a child... and Joseph was too ("It's a turn up for the books, isn't it?") He told us that even though he'd heard there would be a baby, he didn't quite put the pieces together.

"I didn't see it coming," he confessed. "I found out there was going to be a baby in The Originals - I found out earlier than [exec] Julie [Plec] would have liked me to, I think. I'm not going to get anyone in trouble, but someone slipped up and told me. They thought I knew. But for some reason I didn't put it together that it was Klaus's baby."

What, even though we all saw Klaus and Hayley going at it on The Vampire Diaries? Yep, that's right! "I knew it was Hayley who was having this baby, and it was just after we filmed the episode where we, you know, get it on, have a liaison," Joseph joked. "And still I didn't put it together! I was like, 'There's going to be this child and it's Hayley's, and we're going to be warring over this child, I think, or something, and it's going to be really cool'.

"Then I read the episode and I was like, 'I'm the father?' And then just like, 'How did I not see that coming? Why didn't I put it together?' So it's exciting." We feel a bit better about our jaws dropping now.

Are we going to see Klaus, like, care about his child?

Joseph was pretty clear that he doesn't really know what's going to happen with the baby, but that didn't stop him from making us very intrigued in the possibilities. "I don't know if the baby's going to survive or if Klaus is going to want the baby in the end," he said. "I know he wants it right now - he likes the idea of an heir, but not because he has any illusions about family, just because he believes it will bring him power."

That's all very well and exciting enough, but then Joseph pointed out that we might actually see Klaus begin to care. "I think the most exciting thing for me about the storyline is the idea of this bloodthirsty, murdering sociopath with a tiny, little, vulnerable newborn baby, and if he starts to care about that baby and then that relationship is threatened, I think woe betide the person that comes between them," he teased. "I think that's going to be really amazing - to have this guy and all he cares about is this tiny child."

Um, yes, that sounds kind of great, we can't disagree. (Oh, and then Joseph asked: "What will the baby look like?" We have no idea, but we can't wait to find out.)

Klaus and Hayley might have to come to some kind of agreement... but for how long?

The Originals is really just that age-old story of a one-night stand which comes back to haunt you when it turns out that you've knocked up your lover with a monstrous hybrid baby because of a supernatural loophole. It's happened to everyone. But it does mean that things are a bit more awkward than the dilemma over whether to cook some breakfast in the morning or let them slip out without comment.

So what's going to be going on with Klaus and Hayley? Joseph agreed that there could be some problems there - "She's fiery... she certainly doesn't mind standing up to Klaus, and hasn't from the beginning" - but he pointed out that they can't argue forever.

"I think they're going to have to reach some sort of understanding if this is going to work with having the child and protecting the child," he said. "I think the child is going to be threatened every step of the way." But will that last forever? Not necessarily.

"I think for now, she's safe," Joseph said. "While she has the baby inside her, she's safe. But once she's had the child, I don't know." Eeek!

Um, what's Caroline going to think about all this?

Erm, hello? Klaus was just telling Caroline about how he intends to be her "last love" (excuse us while we swoon again), and now he's expecting a baby with a one-night-stand. This could be really awkward. "Poor Caroline Forbes!" Joseph grinned - but then he was whisked away to the next interview before telling us how he thinks she'll react. "Oh good, I don't have to answer that," he joked. Maybe not, but from his cheeky grin we think we might be in for a treat there.

Joseph is really quite excited about how excited we are

Okay, so this isn't about the baby, but how about some bonus stuff about how excited Joseph is? He admitted that he was "nervous" about bringing the show to Comic-Con - but it turns out he needn't have worried.

"We just did the panel in the Ballroom, and it was full of people and it was such a relief because I was wondering, 'Is anyone going to show up?'" he joked. "Like you throw a party and no-one comes! But I've been doing interviews with all the [cast] today and having such fun. I really felt like this is going to work. I think this is going to be something. It's been amazing." Well, we're certainly massively excited - the show can't come quickly enough...

The Originals premieres on The CW on October 15.
