Andrew Garfield Upset over Shailene Woodley's 'Spider-Man' Departure

She was cast in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and expected to appear in the third installment. She shot a few scenes. Then, she was cut. Shailene Woodley, the star of the upcoming young-adult, book-based "Divergent," has expressed her disappointment over losing the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spidey's next flick.

And Yahoo! Movies has learned Spidey was sad about it, too. "That's a bummer," Andrew Garfield told us at this year's San Diego Comic-Con when we brought up Woodley's departure. "The reason why I would've liked it to have been in… is Shailene, because she's so talented and because she did just beautiful work," he said of the 21-year-old actress. "I only did a couple of scenes with her, but gosh, it was just beautiful to hang with her and work with her. She is not only an incredibly talented, gifted actress with great craft but also she's one of the better people you'll meet." As if we needed more proof that Garfield is an ultra nice guy.

The 29-year-old Spidey star then offered the same reason director Marc Webb gave for Woodley's untimely departure from the film's cast (which includes Garfield's real-life main squeeze Emma Stone): story. "In the sense of storytelling, it didn't quite make sense to introduce another girl," Garfield told Yahoo! Movies. "The idea neutralizes the budding and growing relationship between Gwen [Stacy] and Peter [Parker]," he went on to explain.

But Garfield makes no bones about it. He wasn't happy to say goodbye to Woodley. "I'll go on record and say it's a bummer that those scenes won't be seen because she just killed it and she was perfect."
