You probably haven’t heard of Max Marshall before, but you’ve definitely seen her work – the Baltimore-born London resident has been creating wigs for Lady Gaga and working with Charlie Le Mindu for years. Her VHS-style video for debut single ‘Don’t Trip’ is just as stylish as you’d expect, although she’s swapped the bespoke couture for baseball caps and rolled cigarettes.
The song itself? A sublimely cool piece of old-school R&B reminiscent of Lauryn Hill’s earliest work, and emerging producers Electric adding a well-judged layer of twinkling beats. Music might be a world away from making wigs for Gaga, but somehow we think the 21-year-old’s going to do just fine.
Don’t Trip is out on 12th August.
Her mixtape Forgive Me is also available for free here. I've been listening to "Must Be Crazy" non-stop (Lana Del Rey/Gnarls Barkley/Floetry mashup).
