There's good news and bad news about the way BET/executive producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil worked out the structure of Being Mary Jane, a new drama about a super-successful anchorwoman who's also struggling with love, contemplating motherhood and enduring extended-family breadwinner status.
The bad news is: last night's premiere was a major tease, since the regular series doesn't kick off until January. The good news is: its 90-minute format allowed for us to get to know Gabrielle Union's title character so well, we'll have no problem keeping her fresh in our minds til winter. I can't remember the last time I watched a show and was so utterly hooked on a heroine.
I think that's partially due to room-to-breathe extended episode, partially due to Gabrielle's authentic, balls-out performance, and partially due to the fact that the character is so damn likable for so many reasons, such as:
Pre-booty call: she really commits to the 2-minute cleanup--skiding across the floor and shoving wineglasses under the bed.
Post-booty-call: she ejects the offending caller by PUNTING HIS SHOE (I need to know how many takes this required. It was incendiary.)
She does the rolled-up sweatpants and big hoodie thing when she's in a bad mood.
OMG, she clicks through Facebook pics of exes while she's instant-messaging them. (Mara is onto us.)
As much as her family irritates her, she can't say no to them at the end of the day.
Oh, and just in case you're worried there's not enough crazy lurking beneath that perfect veneer to keep us interested: we closed out the ep on Mary Jane stealing someone's sperm. This is her "I'm stealing your sperm even as you're sort of annoying me" face.
Again: the show doesn't properly start til January. But if you didn't catch the premiere last night, you have plenty of time to catch up. NO EXCUSES. For those of you who did watch, what did you think?

BET show Getting mainstream coverage?....never thought I would see the day. This is really an excuse to discuss last night's episode. They are going to lose momentum by leaving the start of the season till next year.
