Has Portia de Rossi had surgery?

Fans question her changing look after return of Arrested Development

Any fan of Arrested Development would be familiar with Portia de Rossi's character of Lindsay Bluth-Funke, a materialistic and vain activist whose self-interest in charitable causes has helped keep the family business afloat.

While plastic surgery wouldn't be unthinkable to Lindsay, some are wondering if Portia herself underwent a transformation for her return to the cult-favourite series.

Fans and the media alike are buzzing over whether the 40-year-old has gone under the knife after watching the quirky comedy's full-season debut on Netflix on May 26.

Altered visage: Fans of Arrested Development have taken note of Portia de Rossi's physical transformation in the new season released on Netflix last week

The blonde adopted twin of Jason Bateman's character Michael appears with long straw-like hair, a stark contrast to her own flaxen-coloured chopped cut she's been sporting in recent months.

Her face as well appears to be transformed, her cheekbones pronounced as the skin on her forehead and cheeks looks flawless, sparking speculation of a brow lift, Botox, implants and even a rhinoplasty.

The seven year hiatus could easily be to blame for the transformation, as the last time Portia assumed the role was in 2006 when the comedy was axed by Fox after a short yet critically-acclaimed three-season run.

Could it be age? Some fans say it's just the seven year hiatus to blame for Portia's new look (Pictured in May)

The highly anticipated Netflix revamp has been met with mixed reaction as some nonplussed fans have taken to Twitter to express complaints -- and most aimed at Portia's new look.

'Jesus Portia De Rossi doesn't even look like the same person!' user Jeremy Wilhelm wrote.

'I don't get why Netflix spent all this much money on CGI morphing effects for Portia De Rossi's face,' fan Cabel Maxfield Sasser tweeted.

Some stepped up to defend the blonde beauty, understanding that the new look could easily have been planned by the crew in hair and make-up.

'It is so obviously the wig & make-up. Haters,' Kelly Carey said.

MailOnline has reached out to Portia's team for comment.

Body image has been a constant struggle for Portia, who battled anorexia in her 20s, reaching a low point of only 82 pounds on her five-foot-eight frame.

During that time the former Ally McBeal star says she lived on 300 calories a day and hid it from her castmates and friends.

'I definitely had some pretty amazing willpower to get down to 82 pounds,' she told Oprah in 2010.

'I would prefer to die than fail another diet.

'And that's what I was holding on to. I didn't think about anything else.'

Then and now: Fans say Portia doesn't measure up to her looks during the show's first run nearly a decade ago

Once she overcame her anorexia she switched to a more holistic approach by turning to a vegan diet.

Portia has maintained that she has no interest in stopping nature from taking it's course, instead crediting just being 'happy and healthy' with her transformation.

'It's really changed my eyes, my everything,' she said of her age-defying look in an interview with People for their Most Beautiful issue. On turning 40, the wife of comedienne Ellen DeGeneres says that she's happy with letting her body and her figure age naturally.

'The one thing I don't wanna do is chase what I looked like at 20,' she said.

'People do think I look younger than I am because I dress like a teenager.'
