Almost a year to the day after cancer claimed his life, Adam "MCA" Yauch—one third of the legendary Beastie Boys—has a park named after him. This morning, the New York City Department of Parks held a ceremony officially changing the name of Brooklyn Heights' Palmetto Playground to Adam Yauch Park.
Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markovitz was joined by Yauch's fellow Beastie Boys member Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz as the playground, which Yauch frequented as a youth, was renamed in his honor. There was virtually no resistance to a social media campaign to have the playground's name changed as a tribute to Yauch.
Yauch passed away on May 4, 2012 at the age of 47 after losing a battle to throat cancer. During today's ceremony, Ad-Rock paid homage to his fallen friend with this brilliant quote:
Adrock: Like the Wu-tang Clan, the Beasties is for the children
