Zero Dark Thirty and Argo win at the Writers Guild Awards

Zero Dark Thirty and Argo won the top movie awards last night from the Writers Guild, where rock & roll documentary Searching for Sugar Man won its category and Breaking Bad took a top television award. Zero Dark Thirty won Best Original Screenplay for Mark Boal, whose account of the hunt for Osama bin Laden is also considered a frontrunner at the Academy Awards on February 24th. Boal was asked backstage what message he wanted to send with the the film. "I think [director Kathryn Bigelow] said it best when she said she wanted to shine a light on a dark decade," he said, according to Reuters. "I don't know that I could put it any better than that."

Argo, another Oscar contender, won Best Adapted Screenplay for Chris Terrio for his fictionalized account of how the United States smuggled six fugitive Americans out of Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. Searching for Sugar Man, about the enigmatic Detroit musician Sixto Rodriguez and his popularity in South Africa, took Best Documentary Screenplay.

In the television categories, AMC's Breaking Bad won Best Drama Series, while the FX show Louie won Best Comedy Series and HBO's Girls won Best New Series.
