“We’re very happy with premiere ratings for The Americans and, just as importantly, we’re proud of the widespread critical acclaim the show has received,” said John Landgraf, President and General Manager, FX. “We have no doubt that when we get the Live+7 time-shifted ratings from last night, The Americans will rank among the best series debuts ever on FX. We’re grateful to Executive Producers Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, Graham Yost, and to our outstanding cast led by Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich, as well as the entire team behind this great show.”

Before, while she was fighting him before the rape she couldn't beat him and knock him down so he ended up raping her.
But once he was in her garage, her rage is what let her finally beat him and overcome that hurdle.
lets no forget, she is still fighting FOR the rapists, technically. so she wasn't all inspired to be strong and defiant because of that. she only took her opportunity to go after him once she was instructed to take him out. and even then it was only to dump him to Russia, not kill him. and even then she didnt kill him, Phillip did.
I totally see your point, because its true. I just dont think that its whats going on here. it was just showcasing one of the reasons she is so benign and stoic w/ Phillip and her mission I think - not why she is an awesome fighter or good at her job.
It was just that the rape made her cross from that "strong spy" into "bad ass spy" area. The rape gave her strength, in a sense since they seem to always do that. Something horrific has to happen to female characters in order for them to realize they are strong enough to overcome anything but for guys it just comes naturally.
I dont think her kicking the shit out of her rapist made her a bad ass spy...I think it just was retribution for him specifically. I dont think it affected her ability to fight anywhere else, or was her motivation in her job. IDK, just what I think.
but IA that in a lot of scenarios in plotlines, sexual/domestic abuse does trigger women to ~be stronger~, which isnt cool.
Either that or they make them fall in love with some random guy in the show and then they become weak because of it. So they can never win.
