yesterday i had to do a uniform fitting for my new job, which is at a cocktail bar that's still being built so they're still choosing uniforms etc. basically it was this tight pencil dress a la joan holloway, and they gave me 3 different dresses in a size too small, and made me try them on anyway. most of them couldn't even zip up, so i had to stand in front of 10+ people (most of whom were men) from upper management with my back exposed and my bra hanging out. i didn't say anything, because it's not exactly a situation that invites confidence.
i found out what the men's uniforms are fitted (but not tight or skinny) jeans and a shirt/waistcoat, but these bodycon dresses are expected of all the women. in a team of 10, there are 2 girls. both of us are thin and conventionally good-looking and blonde. i've got 6+ years of hospitality experience, the other girl worked in a pub for 6 months. suddenly i'm feeling like we were hired to be a pair of tits in a tight dress, serving cocktails in a hotel bar. i felt absolutely disgusting and i still do.
i've spoken to the manager about finding different dresses, and he said he'd look into it, but "pants aren't the look we're going for", and i think they'll just keep finding dresses like these ones. not only are they completely impractical because it's hospitality and i can't even bend in any of the dresses, for tightness or length, but -- it sounds revolting coming out of my mouth -- the dresses i was put in made me feel like… objectification bait.
