British comedian Russell Brand will host this year’s MTV Movie Awards — and vows the show will be a blockbuster.
The irreverent funnyman — and ex-hubby of songstress Katy Perry — said the celebrity-studded June 3 show will be “more impressive than ‘The Avengers,’” the record-breaking movie that generated $207 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada.
“With his amazing ability to span the full spectrum of comedy from the most high to low brow, Russell’s smart, unpredictable wit uniquely connects him to our audience,” MTV President Stephen Friedman said.
The annual awards are being held in Los Angeles. Past hosts have included Jimmy Fallon, Eddie Murphy and Will Smith.
“The Hunger Games” and “Bridesmaids” top the list of MTV movie contenders with eight nominations each.
Brand will be presenting golden popcorn statuettes to the winners alongside stars such as Charlize Theron, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg.
