Alanis Morissette Unveils New Single, 'Guardian'

The song previews her new studio album, 'Havoc and Bright Lights,' due Aug. 28.

Alanis Morissette offered radio the first taste of her forthcoming eighth studio album, "Havoc and Bright Lights," today (May 11) in the form of new single "Guardian."

"I'll be your keeper for life as your guardian / I'll be your warrior of care, your first warden," sings Morissette, who got married and gave birth to her first child in 2010, life events that appear to have informed the song's lyrics. "I'll be your angel on call, I'll be on demand / The greatest honor of all, as your guardian."

The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter will offer the world premiere performance of "Guardian" on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" Tuesday (15), the same day that the song will be made available at the iTunes Store (making it eligible for the Billboard sales charts to be released the following week). She'll also perform on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on May 22.

'"Havoc" arrives Aug. 28 on Collective Sounds, marking Morissette's first release in four years. Producers on the set include Guy Sigsworth (Bjork, Madonna, Seal) and Joe Chiccarelli (Tori Amos, Elton John, My Morning Jacket, U2).

"This record, as always, is a snapshot of what I currently obsess about, care about, and what strikes me at 4 in the morning in my most introspective moments," says Morissette, who has sold 20.7 million albums in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her 1995 album "Jagged Little Pill" has sold 14.7 million, making it the third-biggest-selling set of the SoundScan era.

"('Havoc') is my emotional, psychological, social and philosophical commentary through song."
