Ready Player One Casting Speculation Begins

Ready Player One, Still Loading; Casting Speculation Begins

It’s been almost two years since Warner Bros won the screen rights to Ready Player One, the debut science fiction novel by Ernie Cline. But with little information being released about an upcoming film, speculation and debate has run rampant regarding any and all details about the project.

The book follows Wade Watts, a teen in the midst of a treasure hunt for the billion-dollar fortune of a legendary gaming creator. The story takes place in the year 2044, a rather grim and bleak future. Wade, like most others, finds solace in escaping to OASIS, a virtual reality. As the treasure hunt heats up, Wade is forced to battle not only in the virtual world but in the real one as well.

No names have been attached to the project as of yet. In fact, all we know now is that Cline will write the script. Fans of the book have been quick to make their own recommendations — from Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page to Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges — on any number of online media outlets, including the book’s Facebook page. But perhaps the most interesting debate about the film is how it will look. The virtual reality setting offers any number of options particularly when it comes to incorporating technology from both film and video games. The announcement of a director may provide fans with a better idea of what to expect but until then, your guess is as good as mine.

I know the ONTD Book Club read this one, and I personally really loved it, but how the hell can they make this book into a movie?
