The Wanted's Max: "US Success Is Surreal"

The Wanted may be riding high in the US charts but band member Max George has exclusively told MTV.co.uk that they still can't quite come to terms with their overnight success Stateside.

Following the news that The Wanted's hit single Glad You Came has hit No.2 on the US iTunes chart - edging ahead of fellow UK boyband One Direction- George claims things feel very surreal for himself, Tom, Siva, Jay and Nathan.

Speaking of their American success, Max told us: "Obviously, it feels great. We've been over there and gave it a go. We did a few TV shows and had a sell-out small tour but we never expected to be top five as quick as we have.

"We have just got to keep at it now. We've not broken America yet and we've just got to keep pushing it but it feels great."

As for their appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' chat show, he claimed: "Ellen actually heard the song [Glad You Came] and got in touch with us and was like 'listen guys, I love the song and would really like it to be my show that broadcasts you performing it first' and we were like 'alright then yeah'.

"So then we got on a flight the day after and flew out and did the show. We were pretty nervous before because we didn't know what the reaction would be, but as soon as we went out, the audience were dancing and we thought 'sod it' so we went off into the audience and got involved."

When asked if he was surprised that their Stateside tour sold out, George claimed: "Absolutely as it was our first time over there and obviously, you see on Twitter that people are saying come over [to America] but we didn't expect that.

"We would turn up at every gig that we did and it was absolutely rammed and they were singing every song - we can't really get our heads round it to be honest."

He continued: "To be fair, it's all surreal at the moment. Not only are we on our way to success in the US, we've got our first arena tour in the UK and to turn up at such big arenas and have them sold out and your stood there on the stage thinking 'all these people are here for us' it's a strange feeling.

"We are absolutely loving it and having a top time and I cant wait for the tour to finish in Dublin so we can have a drink to celebrate."

Comparing their UK and American fans, Max revealed that audiences in Blighty are far more excitable when it comes to their shows, explaining: "With the US crowd, they love music over there and they really get into it when we are performing and literally bounce off you.

"Here [in the UK], they are just crazy in the sense of they scream in your face and they wanna rip your clothes off which is brilliant."
