Supernatural's New God Misha Collins Spills on His Limited Season-Seven Role

No more Mr. Nice Castiel.

The angel of Supernatural seasons past is gone. Instead Misha Collins is playing God—which seems like it would be a fairly tough gig, right? Not really, Collins told us at the Television Critics Association party Wednesday night.

"It's easy, I could do that in my sleep," he said. "There's nothing to it." Well, isn't he just a Braggy McBraggerton?

In all seriousness though, fans were a bit shocked when it was announced Castiel wouldn't returning as a regular in season seven. But one person who wasn't surprised by the news? Collins.

"It was a long time coming," he tells us. "[I have] mixed feelings about it. It's exciting to have other prospects now and it's fun to do other roles, so I'm looking forward to doing some other stuff. I will miss the old crew up on Supernatural in Vancouver."

As of now, Collins would only confirm that Castiel will appear in the first two episodes of season seven opposite the Winchester brothers, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). However, fans looking forward to seeing Castiel's unexpected (and refreshing) brand of humor ("Hey assbutt!") should prepare themselves for some changes.

"The character is not providing that comic relief anymore, which I think is fine. I think that sort of ran its course,"
Collins says. "It's one of the things that's great about the show. They don't rest on their laurels. Just because something is working, doesn't mean they keep doing it. They like to change it up and try something new and it doesn't get stale—and that's cool."

"I'm not playing the fish out of water sidekick anymore—that element is gone," Collins continues, joking, "The show is not going to be funny anymore. Period."

While Collins wouldn't divulge too much about Castiel's role (or ultimate goal) this season, he teases, "He's God and he's trying to rectify the wrongs in the world and having a difficult time doing it and meeting with both external and internal obstacles."

Could one of those obstacles be his friendship with Dean? Of Cas' relationship with Dean, Collins would only say it's "definitely a changed and diminished dynamic." Take from that what you will.

So how has the transition from loyal sidekick to being big and bad worked out for Collins? "It's a different position to be in. I was always supporting them. We were always fighting on the same side and now we're definitely at loggerheads. It's a totally different dynamic."

How do you feel about Castiel's reduced role this season? Are you sad to hear his relationship with Dean is "diminished?" Sound off below in the comments. Plus, we talked to Misha on the red carpet at Wednesday's TCA party, so check back for some on-camera Supernatural hotness.

Ugh. Srsly tho, she has no idea what she's doing...
