Mae Whitman joining 'Wallflower'

'Scott Pilgrim' actress joins Logan Lerman, Emma Watson in indie drama

"Parenthood" star Mae Whitman is in final negotiations to join Logan Lerman and Emma Watson in the indie coming-of-age drama "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

The acclaimed 1999 epistolary novel follows a shy and unpopular high school student who writes a series of letters to an anonymous penpal. Book gained attention for its mature exploration of the awkward times of adolescence.

Whitman will play Mary Elizabeth, a tattooed vegetarian who acts as the protagonist's first girlfriend.

"Wallflower" author Stephen Chbosky is directing from his own screenplay, and John Malkovich, Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith are producing through their Mr. Mudd banner.

Production is scheduled to begin next month in Pittsburgh.

Whitman was last seen squaring off against Michael Cera as Roxy Richter in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." Thesp will soon be seen playing John Cusack's missing daughter in the Warner Bros. thriller "The Factory," and she's also attached to co-star in the indie comedy "The Hand Job."

Whitman is repped by ICM and Industry Entertainment.
