NEW YORK, N.Y. - A Portuguese model is considering a psychiatric defence as he fights charges of castrating and murdering a Portuguese TV journalist in a New York hotel room.
But Renato Seabra's lawyer said Friday he was waiting for hospital records before deciding whether to make Seabra's mental state an issue in the case.
The 21-year-old has pleaded not guilty. He's being held in a psychiatric hospital jail ward.
Authorities say Seabra admitted slamming 65-year-old Carlos Castro's head into a television, stabbing him with a corkscrew and choking and stomping on him Jan. 7. Castro's body was found on the floor, bloodied, naked and castrated.
Friends said the two were a couple. But Seabra's mother said they weren't.
