After a few weeks of back-and-forth speculation, "The Kennedys" will finally settle into its new cable home on ReelzChannel for an April 3 premiere date, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
And the Kennedy saga lives on.
The epic eight-part miniseries, which chronicles the life and times of late president John F. Kennedy and wife Jackie, was originally set to air on The History Channel early January, but parent company A&E ultimately pulled the plug after the show sparked an outcry from the Kennedy camp. . .
Former Kennedy adviser Theodore Sorensen told The New York Times that the show was "vindictive" and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the president's nephew, spoke with Access Hollywood last week, stating: "I don't think that - in any case, whoever it's about - that we should be teaching history to Americans that is not true."
Maria Shriver, the former first lady of California and daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, JFK's younger sister, reportedly put pressure on friends at NBC and Disney/ABC to shelve the $30 million miniseries.
And it worked, at least for a while.
A&E Television Networks released a statement several weeks ago, saying that "after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand."
The series, which would have been The History Channel's first scripted series, was dubbed inaccurate by critics and "historical fiction" by the network.
Following the History fallout, the producers for the project tried to strike a deal with Showtime, Starz and FX, all of whom passed on the show. Showtime CEO Matt Blank, however, reached out to friend Stan Hubbard, the CEO of ReelzChannel, a 4-year-old independent cable channel broadcasting to 60 million homes nationwide.
And just like that, "The Kennedys" had a home.
"We think it will drive ratings and put a spotlight on this network that has never been on it before," Hubbard told the Hollywood Reporter. "We're going to do a full-blown marketing campaign."
"One of the benefits of being an independent network is that you can be an independent voice and you don't have to worry about coporate pressure or political pressure," he added. "This is a project that deserves to be seen."
"The Kennedys" will air its first two parts on April 3, and ReelzChannel plans to air each successive episode throughout that week.
Big name players like Katie Holmes (Jackie Kennedy), Greg Kinnear (John F. Kennedy), Barry Pepper (Robert F. Kennedy) and Tom Wilkinson (Joe Kennedy) fill out the cast.
