Paul Bettany Was Originally Eyed for Colin Firth’s 'King's Speech' Role

Screenwriter David Seidler says he initially thought Bettany "would be the actor to play the role."

Though Colin Firth is getting raves for his performance in the King’s Speech (and is expected to receive an Oscar nomination next week), he wasn’t originally eyed for the role of King George VI.

Screenwriter David Seidler tells the New York Post: "When I initially wrote the screenplay, I immediately had Geoffrey Rush in mind for [speech therapist] Lionel Logue. But I thought Paul Bettany would be the actor to play the king. I wanted Paul."

Looking back, he says, "I was lucky that it was decided the role would go to Colin. As soon as he read for it, I knew he was perfect."
