Rocker Pete Doherty escaped an additional prison sentence yesterday (27JAN06) after sticking his middle finger up at the judge who jailed him. The BABYSHAMBLES rocker made the gesture when he was told he would be held in custody until he is sentenced for possession of drugs on 8 February (06). He risked contempt of court, but Judge Stephen Dawson happened to be looking the other way. Doherty was arrested twice in one day on suspicion of possession of drugs on Thursday (26JAN06), his third arrest in a month.
ASHER D WINS PHILOSOPHY DEBATE
SO SOLID CREW rapper ASHER D won a debate at the prestigious Cambridge University in England - when he argued that rap was better than philosophy. The 21 SECONDS hitmaker - who recently served an 18-month prison sentence for carrying a loaded gun - argued that rap songs dealt with reality and reached more people than philosophy ever has. He said, "The stuff I talk about, I have never heard philosophers talk about. Teenage pregnancies, drugs, shootings... I have the listener, you do not."
Walters won the vote by 90 votes to 88.
BLUNT BASHES BURGLAR WITH AWARD
Singer JAMES BLUNT fought off a burglar who broke into his hotel room by assaulting him with the Best Newcomer award he had just won. Blunt woke to find a man in his room at the exclusive Martinez Hotel in Cannes, France, just hours after he was presented with the prize at the NRJ Radio Awards on 21 January (06). He says, "It was pitch black in the room so I couldn't really seen anything. I was looking for a phone to ring downstairs, or for an emergency button to push, but the only thing I could find was my NRJ award. It's a big solid lump, so I picked it up and whacked him. He then threw himself off the balcony and ran away." The YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL hitmaker is up for five more trophies at next month's (FEB06) Brit awards, including Best Male, Best Album and British Breakthrough. He joked, "It would be good to win a Brit award - you never know when it may come in handy to use on burglars."
