If you think the course of Seth and Summer's true love will continue along smoothly, you've clearly forgotten how things are done on The O.C. In an attempt to "ratchet up" the angst for the young lovers who seem like old marrieds, series creator Josh Schwartz is bringing back their biggest speed bump ever: Seth's one-time love interest, Anna, played by Samaire Armstrong. "She returns when there's a little bit of emotional upheaval for Seth as he prepares to go away to college," Schwartz says of the pixie's multiepisode arc, which kicks off at the end of April. "Based on all this anxiety, Seth really needs a stabilizing force. But Anna's timing is inopportune if you're Summer."
And just so Marissa doesn't feel left out, she'll also find her relationship under siege by a female when new kid on the beach Sadie ("Thirteen" vixen Nikki Reed) makes a play for Ryan. "She's going to bring out a different side of Ryan," Schwartz says, "and challenge his savior complex." Any other big events washing up on high tide? "There will be a funeral soon," Schwartz teases. "Someone will be dying in the next month, and the character is pretty important." Not Nana Cohen! Nooooo!
