The Hooks have an idea they’re sure will be a hit — a tribute to Selena. The first 2,500 fans will get a Selena poster on July 30. The traditional Friday night fireworks will have a Selena theme. Video vignettes of Selena performances will be shown throughout the night.
Oh, and there will be baseball, too. The Hooks take on the Midland RockHounds.
Members of the Tejano star’s family will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
“It’s an honor for us to dedicate an evening to Selena,” Michael Wood, general manager of the Hooks, said in a news release. “I like to think she’d be a Hooks fan.“Her spirit lives on in anyone who loves this city and seeks to entertain its public.”
The celebration ties in with the recent release of “La Leyenda,” a boxed-set collection of Selena’s music, which went on sale in March.“La Leyenda” is a new collection of Selena’s music, in multiple CD and digital download configurations. It includes comments from fans and messages from her parents, husband, siblings and other family members and friends, recounting special memories of the Tejano superstar, known for hits including “Como La Flor,” “Amor Prohibido,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and “No Me Queda Mas.”
The evening’s event at Whataburger Field is designed to recognize the impact of Selena’s life and music.
It is presented by State Farm and sponsored by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, KSAB Tejano 99.9, La Preciosa 1400AM and Capitol Latin/EMI. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. Selena was shot and killed on March 31, 1995, outside a local hotel by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar, who is serving a life sentence. Had she lived, Selena, who began performing with her siblings at the age of 9, would be 39.
She won a Grammy in 1993 and later that year opened two Selena Etc. boutiques, one in Corpus Christi and the second in San Antonio.
In 1995, three months after her death, fans got a glimpse of what her crossover to an English/pop career would’ve been with the release of “Dreaming of You,” a combination of Spanish-language songs and new English-language tracks.
The CD debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200.
