Sudanese Supermodel Alek Wek Graces the Cover of South Africa Elle's 14th Birthday Issue

 Asks, DO BLACK COVERS SELL?
The question no one wants to answer (Honestly)

The April issue of South African fashion publication, ELLE, toasts its 14th birthday with an exclusive cover and interview with international Sudanese supermodel, Alek Wek.  Shot in South Africa by photographer Oliviero Toscani Alek gives a personal account of how she escaped from dodging bullets in Sudan to conquering New York and catwalks around the world.

Even more interestingly, the April issue also features a story flagged on its cover- an honest look at the question: 'do black covers sell?' Though the era of apartheid ended in 1994, South Africa continues to battle intense racism and resentment from the black community.

“This outfit makes a strong statement for style democracy and Wek’s vibrant smile captures the optimism and high spirits thatELLE magazine epitomises going forward into its second seven-year South African cycle,” says ELLE Editor Jackie Burger of the cover.
