Please, Hollywood, Don’t Ruin Our Childhood: 12 Books We Don't Want To See As Movies

Adapting children’s books into films really is a brilliant financial move for studios: not only do whole families buy tickets, adults without children probably want to see their favorite book on the big screen too. Except when you totally ruin it. The Cat in the Hat (2003), anyone? Just thinking of Mike Myers in that creepy cat jumper makes me think less about the Dr. Seuss book and more about bestiality. And do you remember Inkheart (2008)? I think Brendan Fraser was in it, but I’ve cut him off since the second Mummy movie. While the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) wasn’t so bad, Johnny Depp’s slick metrosexual Wonka was a lot less loveable than Gene Wilder’s Wonka. Movies like that make us fear for the celluloid-state of the upcoming Where the Wild Things Are (though Spike Jonze directing it gives us hope)—and the following list of much-beloved childhood books.

Hollywood is where they shoot too many pictures and not enough actors.Collapse )
